Whether a larger reel seat is right or wrong for a particular build is up to the fisherman and builder. For me, the move to the larger OD meant that I could fish bass spinning rods without pain shooting up my forearm, something that stared in my early 20s. This is one of those things that falls in line with spiral wraps, micro guides, and other things that are beneficial to rod building in some way. The biggest difference being that this one comes with a weight penalty.

There aren't many that would say that a 1.05" OD Tennessee handle would be out of line for this type of a build. An 18 mm pipe style seat gives you a similar sized place to mount the reel. The seats are significantly longer than needed for most freshwater sized reels and can be trimmed to accommodate. My preferred grip style is a TN handle, but my travel rod uses an 18 mm seat in a down locking configuration with all excess threads trimmed to allow my fingers to get to the blank similar to my TN handle configuration.

18 mm skeletons are not available, but if you are capable of turning your own insert, you can make your own by cutting an 18 mm pipe seat.

Roger T asked;

"Will a size 1000 reel lock down securely in a #16 spinning reel seat? "

The answer is........"YES"

Have fun

Shimano 1000s are my go to spinning reels used mainly with size 18 reel seats.

The #16 seats are a bit shorter than the rest of the line in that style so what you'll have to watch out for is whether or not the seat will open far enough for you to get the reel foot in. I believe it will.
