I just received some braid fishing line I had ordered. It's 10# weight, lime green and very thin. Yes-No?

Not the best, has no stretch. Not sure of color retention. A little bit of stretch is desirable. It's great fishing line, use it there, and get wrap thread for wrap. Fuji has neon green and neon lime in both regular and no CP thread. There are others, too.

Ten pound lime green braid is what I use .......on my reels. For wraps I use rod wrapping thread but if had no other option I think most would use anything available in a pinch.

Only if it is dry braid. If it has a lubricant on the braid line I would be concerned about it and epoxy not saturating as well and being repelled by the lubricant. But if dry, why not give it a try. I've never done it with braid so I can't say for sure... just be wary of line lubrication is all I can think of as a hindrance.

Good point, Kent. Many braids do have lubes and coatings.

I'm new to this whole rod building thing. I just ordered and received the braid and was surprised how thin it was. I'm a long time saltwater fisherman, so braid is not new to me. But I'm talking 50# and up for saltwater. Sold the big SW boat and bought a 14' tin boat for freshwater. I'm reading folks are using braid on spinning reals now so thought I'd give it a try.

But, yes, it is lubricated so the epoxy will not sink into it......Bad idea!

However, all is not lost.

Take your spool of braid and make a couple thousand thread pulls.

10 lb braid really excels for a thread pull to use when wrapping rods.

I tie up loops with the braid, inserting a small bright bead in the loop. That way, when the pull loop gets dropped, the bright bead makes the loop much easier to find.

nylon stretches enough to allow the rod to ovalize when flexed..i,m not sure if braid has enough stretch to allow the rod to ovalize..if not the rod may break at one of the wraps..just too risky..

It's not just about the epoxy not sinking in, the lubricants very likely will cause "fisheyes" in the epoxy, dimples. Rod wrapping thread has nothing in it that could interfere with the epoxy leveling well, evenly.

Try it an report back , who knows what will happen +/-

Roy, you can easily make a test wrap on a scrap piece, give it a couple coats of color preserver to seal the wraps, let dry well, then try the epoxy..if you still get fish eyes you will have an answer..

There is another issue I would consider...

Braid is made from polyethylene plastic. It breaks down with UV light from the sun.

Old milk jugs are made from it as well, and when left in the sun, the plastic breaks down and becomes brittle and cracks up and breaks up into pieces rather easily.

Braid line is no different and will also break down and deteriorate with exposure to the sun unless coated in UV protection.

So keep this in mind as well when considering braid. I am not sure if the epoxy you will use to cover it will prevent the molecular breakdown of the plastic as it absorbs the UV light over time.

I do the exact same thing but clean the lubricant off the braid with acetone first. 20# works good too.

Beware of silicone, wax, or any other type of lubricant on thread loops used to pull wrapping tag-ends.
