I finished my first coat of TM Lite at 11:00 am. I can wait until 9:00 am tomorrow to place the second coat,correct?

When applying wrapping epoxy, the second coat (if needed) can be applied when the first coat is set / hardened. It is not really so many hours. I usually let mine harden to a non tacky feel before applying the second coat. The temperature is different at any given time or location so 5 hours may be enough for some, where it may take 8 or more somewhere else.

I think Bruce was concerned he might be waiting too long between coats.

1 coat every 24 hours works well.

Like Roger says 24 hours works best and you should make sure that the epoxy is dry or the second coat will come out soft and tacky so 24 hours is the best way to go.

Thanks for the responses. Lynn was correct, I couldn't remember how long I could wait between coats. This is my first rod in 3 years and I've forgotten.

Glenn that is simply not true that the finish will come out soft and tacky If the second coat is applied before 24 hours. I will often apply one coat in the morning and the second coat in the afternoon and I’ve never had a problem. It will harden up just fine. I have done this with almost all,if not all, the finishes on the market. I just don’t know where there rumors start.

I agree with Norm. I have applied 2nd coats even when the finish is still a little tacky and it always dries hard. I always leave my stir stick and what's left of the finish I used on the bench and will periodically check the unused finish with the stir stick to see where the dryness level is.

Norm is correct as thhhe epoxy does NOT "dry", it cures which takes place without exposure to air!

All of the above replies are correct except that, in a few cases, the epoxy was referred to as “drying” rather than curing. Nit-picking aside, Roger’s 24 hours is a good rule of thumb although Norman’s 6-8 hours is often adequate if cured at >75*F. For the best bond between coats, the sooner = the better to achieve a CHEMICAL/MOLECULAR bond; after 3-5 days of the first coat curing, scuffing the surface should be considered to achieve the next best thing, a MECHANICAL/SANDED bond. But when considering the grand scheme of things, thread wraps are not truly structural so chemical versus mechanical bonds may be a moot point.
