Hi all,

I'm looking for a fly line for a 11" four weight MHX switch rod for spring trout in Southern Ontario. 90% of the time I am doing roll casts, and will be mainly drifting nymphs and worms with/without an indicator with the occasional use of wet flies/soft hackles.

I have some indicator/nymphing line but want to try a double taper line.

The specs I can find from MHX suggest the rod is a 4/5 with a Scandi style line is 250-290 grains. Using the weight as a guideline, this suggests I would need a double taper of either 8 (220), 9 (250) or 10 (300) weights. However, from what I have read most switch/spey casting resources suggest moving up a couple of sizes in the DT which would be 6 (160) or 7 (185).

So my question is would it be better to use the physical line weight specs as a guide as this is closer to the weights needed to load the rod etc.? It just seems odd ordering a 9 weight line for a 4/5 rod.

You're on your own with this.
But - No - a #9 line is not out of the question.
You would be an unusual caster if you end-up liking a DT line.
Read as much as you can find about DT lines written by Bruce Richards.
I assume that you want to do a lot of roll casting with the DT line.
I found that "touch and go" is much better for distance - and less tireing.

Thanks Herb, your input is actually quite helpful. I'll do some research on what Bruce Richards wrote about DT lines before going any further.

Thanks Woody. Steve actually made me one of his scandi style lines for a different switch rod a few years ago. I initially thought a DT line may be a more cost effective option but after looking at some of the prices a custom line by Steve will likely be the same.
