Shipping a 9' Surf Rod

So...after having not shipped a surf rod in a long time I am attempting to ship a 8'10" Thrasher 8106 from Birmingham, AL to Camden, NC. The tube is 110" in length packed.

I am shocked at the current shipping prices. I have historically shipped rods like this from my local post office, but they are no longer accepting - at any price - items over 8' in length. UPS is quoting $185 for ground and FedEx is $248. All freight quotes are over $400. Spee Dee is not available between these two locations.

Anyone have any other ideas or suggestions? Hoping someone who builds more surf rods can show me the way...thanks in advance.

Shipping by bus freight is the only other method I can suggest. No idea what the cost might be.

I had the same issue a couple of weeks ago looking at costs to ship a similar length tube from Tampa Fl. to Huston TX. The customer declined to follow through with the order. Which I would have done also.

One of the reasons multi-piece rods are becoming more popular!

Right. I bought two 9 footers last year, a Rodgeeks and CTS both with offset ferrules (70-30) and couldn't be happier.

Bill,
The only reasonable option is to use Freight for the shipment.

For most rods over 8 foot + inches, UPS, FexEX and USPS all put on about a $250 or more balloon charge on the shipment.

But, freight can ship the same rod for under $50. However, it may be difficult in some parts of the country to work out a freight shipment.

One final option is to contact a local hotshot outfit and ask them to piggyback on another shipment. That price is always negotiable.

I quit shipping anything over 8 feet because i had a similar issue a year and a half ago.

Fortunately there are so many people in Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach who want beach rods, I don't have to worry about shipping anymore.

By the way, and this is sometimes hard to wrap your head around, its cheaper to buy your fishing rod a flight on a plane, than it is to ship it..........
