Just started turning my own handles. Can someone tell me how to ream out the cutout for the reel seat? This is mostly for fly rods. Thanks. Gary

I use a Forstner bit, making the cutout on a ring before I glue up the grip.

Crafty cutter looks great but you can't buy it anywhere. I'll try forstner bits I suppose.

Mudhole carries the Crafty Cutter. I use it, it will handle just about any hidden hood size for fly rod seats or get you close enough so you just need to sand a couple of thousandths off.

I ask about the O.D. because I used a 15/16" hole saw and filed down the outward facing teeth until it cut a .933" hole to accept an REC RSLL and RSLS fly reel seat.
I use smaller hole saws to remove the cork towards the center. Reaming the cork removes the rest.

So get a hole saw SLIGHTLY larger than the hole you want.

I find that a 13/16's Forstner bit fits must reel seats, with a few times having to sand a little afterwards. A 7/8's works for larger reel seats. Forstners remove all the cork (or wood) in one step.
