JTOB saw tooth inlay

Hi all!
I am very satisfied with my results when doing a JTOB jnlay. I have recently tried the saw tooth inlay and I’m not getting the results I want. I have seen some beautiful saw tooth inlays on some of the forums and there must be something I’m missing!
Any help would great!

Jon, Doc Ski has a really good tutorial on his U Tube channel.

Jon,
I started attempting to describe the saw blade version of a JTOB for you but gave up, sorry. There is a lot of validity to the saying, “a picture is worth a thousand words”. That is probably why you have not received more replies. Steven’s suggestion of viewing the Doc Ski video is probably the best avenue to take. If you are still having difficulties, come on over to my shop and I’ll show you everything I know LOL. Good luck!!!

I’ve watched Doc Ski’s video a a few times but even when he showed the end result it didn’t look like some of the ones I seen posted - the blade part looks thicker(on the pics) - almost like the teeth cover 2 incoming threads - and some of them look like the teeth are tapered - if that makes any sense???????

Exactly what I thought also, perhaps it changes with epoxy. Like they say, it's custom rodbuilding, perhaps it's tweaked a little bit. Hopefully someone with more knowhow would shed some light on this topic as I'm also keen on trying my hand at it.

Pretty sure Doc uses big thread. Huge difference in appearance between decorative highlights between A and D size thread.

Jon,
Jerme afforded a link to the video Steven and I were referring to. Unlike the saw blade in the video, mine are one color and it gets a bit tricky when adding and dropping threads for the second course of teeth, at least with the way I have done it in the past. However, I watched the video again and may try Doc’s method of wrapping the thread for the center/body of the blade around the blank and over the standing thread while the blank is stationary. Try to give us a more detailed description of EXACTLY what your problems are. And by the way, Doc even stated he was using size D thread.

Mark,
The only issue I have is the teeth of the blade look like the olive leaves on my JTOB - NOT like saw blade teeth like the ones I have seen. I think I will try making the blade teeth and body out of d thread just to see if it makes a difference. Like I said before - I watch Doc’s video (I have watch them all at least once and love them all!) a number of times - it’s actually the only one I found when searching the web regarding the saw blade.
I mean it’s basically wrapping a thread around another thread as I see it - I will also experiment with the length of each wrap as well. Any additional tips?

I've wrapped that olive branch so exact from Doc Ski's video (having the you tube on using the pause button) and never had it look as good as his. Doc admits to using "D" thread due too his eye sight. With that being said, upon closer observant, I think he's threading over a larger diameter base than a bare rod. One or two layers of thread as an under wrap. This is more apparent on his weaving. What say y'all.

I too have been trying to figure out the “thicker” blades for the modified olive branch. I’ve tried doubling, stacking etc and still can’t get it to look right. The one in Docs video isn’t what Jon and I are speaking of, I believe. Docs has thick verticals but the blade/branch is still a single thread. The ones we’re speaking of the angled blade itself is made to appear wider. Hope someone can post a tutorial video of some sort. Thanks for your help.

Chuck

Hello All.

He has an underwrap and I think it may be the way he is packing it.

You are spot on about what I’m talking about Chuck - maybe your explanation will bring us the answers we are looking for!
