This weekend a customer of mine brought me an Okuma 7ft 11in Heavy action, Matt Daddy casting rod to have a guide he stepped on replaced. What got my attention was that this almost 8 foot rod had a number 12 stripper guide only 6 inches in front of the reel seat !! In all my years I have never seen the likes of this and was wondering if any of you would know why they would place a stripper guide that close to the reel?? Just curious ???

Line control or manufacturing mistake? Curious myself now. Re: Strange position of choker guide

Here is a review of the rod that might help to explain why the stripper is so close. This rod is flipping rod and the close stripper supposedly makes it easier to keep line away from the reel handle and supposedly adds strength to the butt section.

If I recall correctly, placing a taller guide 6"-10" in front of the reel is one of the many things introduced to bass rods by Rich Forhan, and as mentioned is placed there to help control the line and keep it away from hook keepers, reel handles, etc. It seems like a great modification to dedicated flipping rod. I'm not sure what the impact is if you decided to pitch and/or cast with a rod build this way, though I suspect it wouldn't be as bad as one might think.
