tip top for noodle blank with tip measuring 1.1mm

I am looking to build an ice rod on a thin noodle blank. The tip measures 1.1mm. Does any body make a top that small with a larger ring size. I have had these blanks for a couple of years but I've hesitated building because of the tip size and also knowing it will be hard wrapping a rod tip that really is like a noodle. Hope all of you and your loved ones are staying healthy and safe.

Most of us have always used a #3 or #4 fly guide. It’s a bit of a pain but it’s not that hard to do.

Mudhole and Janns also have glue on tip tops for ice rods, but not sure about one that measures 1.1mm. Like Chuck, I prefer wrapping on a fly guide - they always fit! Make or buy a rod tip support, super glue the guide to the blank, and it's easy to wrap.

Curious about the noodle blank that measures 1.1mm. Unless that's for larger jigs/lures, that is quite big for a "noodle" tip and may not have the characteristic "noodle bend" to detect up-bites if that's part of what is planned for this rod. Many noodle blanks have tips in the .030 to .034 inch or less range, vs. .043 inch for a 1.1mm blank. Maybe test the blank with guides just taped on to see if it is what you want it to be. If you want it to flex more, solid fiberglass and carbon ice rod blanks can be sanded.

This blank is fiberglass and has a very extreme taper. I don't have a digital micrometer but measured with my cheapo mic. It is just barely over 1mm so I guessed 1.1. This tip is very small. I cut some off the back because it came 36". The bend in the blank only goes down about 6-8". It definitely will be more sensitive than any ice rod I have now. I bought these blanks a couple years ago out of Oregon. Don't remember the company name. Now that winter is near I thought I would start getting some supplies. Thanks for your thoughts and input!

Yup...I've seen how you guys do that with fly guides. Don't know if I am that good or have enough patience. I still might try if I can't find the ring size I want. I did find the correct tube size. Thanks!

Hey Tony

Also, look at Bass Khang. They have very similar blanks to what you’re speaking of and he sells glue in small tips that I have used on occasion.

Sounds like a nice blank Todd.

Micrometers can be tricky to read - could it be that this is a micrometer that measures in thousandths of an inch instead of mm's? (Other things measured in inches are usually not calibrated in thousandths, so it would be easy to mistake a conventional style inch micrometer as being metric.) If the numbers on the rotating barrel read from 0 thru 25 per revolution, that's a micrometer calibrated in inches and this could be a tip that measures about .030 inches and that would line up with how you describe what the blank feels like. Didn't want you to get stuck having to reorder the tip top in case the tip measurement is different.

Good luck and enjoy your new ice rod.

6 & 8mm ceramic rings with tubes down to 2.5/64". 1.1mm would use a 3/64" tube.
