I'm a novice rod builder and I am 69 years old, I have never been surf fishing and I'm a RV owner traveling primarily in the southeast with a home base in South Carolina. My dilemma is I know so little about surf fishing I don't know where to start! Length, power, brand. I'm looking at Rodgeeks, Rainshadow, or North Fork. Any other suggestions? TIA LOVE Re: First Surf Rod

No single rod will do everything. So you need to sort of dial in on what you want to do in the surf. Plug casting? Bait fishing? Given that you are a rod builder, novice or otherwise, you might consider building two rods - maybe a 9 footer for casting plugs in the 1 to 3 ounce range and another slightly heavier rod, say a 10 to 11 footer for throwing sinker and bait. Something that might accommodate around 3 to 6 ounces. Now this won't be ideal everywhere, but it might get you into a couple rods that at least would have you covered in a pretty wide variety of situations.

I would add two other names to the list. Lamiglas GSB series which has long been the mainstay.....and Black Hole Suzuki. Russ in Hollywood, FL. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
