New and excited

Good Evening all,

I am brand new to rod building and am excited about getting started. I have been reading for a while, and the knowledge here has been very helpful with encouraging me to get started. I decided on a Mudhole complete start up kit with the 7’ mh rod. I hope this will be a good starting point. I look forward to jumping into this potential addiction and soaking up your knowledge.
I do have a question. I also decided to jump on the NFC sale to grab a couple more blanks for winter projects. I put them in my cart and was going to check out when I saw a $35 shipping AND a $20 federal excise tax. I have never seen the excise tax before. Is this normal?

Thanks for any and all advise on this starry up kit, rod purchases, and anything you can offer.

Excise IS normal, and federally required, if it's not integrated in price.

Herb, is it normal to charge $20.00 tax on a $65.00 item?

The excise tax is normal but somebody isn't figuring it correctly. The tax is capped at 10% or $10 of the selling price, whichever is less. On a $65 blank, the most the excise tax would be is $6.50.

Looks like the excise tax is calculated on the listed retail price, not the sale price.

That makes sense. A lot of retailers figure it in their prices and don’t show it as a separate cost to the consumer. This makes the product look cheaper at initial decision. Don’t get me wrong, it still looks like a pretty good deal if the NFC blanks are as good as I assume they are. I was just a little shocked when at checkout, my total jumped $55. Thanks for the info. You guys are great.

Hey Keith, my Mudhole order did have free shipping. My cart at North Fork Composites was the one with the shipping and Federal Excise I was asking about. I had just never seen the tax stated that way on an order.

You don't see the charge on other sites, because it's built into the price of the blank. As far as it being $20, it's $10 per blank.

Thanks David, that makes sense. It was a curiosity when I saw it in my cart.
