Aero seat gone gummy

I haven't been able to fish for awhile do to an accident.

So the other day I grab a rod I built about 9 years ago with an Aero reel seat. To my surprise the seat is gummy. I had black goop all over my hands. I have never had this happen with any reel seat.

Anyone else had this problem? Any effective cure? Hate to think I have to replace the reel seat. Hate even more to think I need to take that seat "off the table" for future builds.

Me too. I think you may be able to take the gum off with something like "GooGone" or similar product. It was probably a "soft" finish, and they are susceptible to damage by Deet or similar products. I'm leery of the soft finishes now.

I also am leery, I've seen a lot of soft finishes that were just that.

Russell,

Please email me a few pictures to illustrate what you are describing and we will recommend the best solution available. This is a different circumstance than we have experienced.

My email is theron@americantackle.us

Thanks!

I do not own any AREO reel seats but I had this problem with my Pflueger spinning reel handles, had to wipe them down with accohol.

Dennis, timely post as that is what I did this morning.

Theron, thank you for the offer of help. I think I have the problem solved. Seems like the layer of "soft touch" coating had deteriorated over time. It was fine when I had last used it and was surprised when I picked it up for the first time in close to two years. Mosquito repellent could indeed be the cause.

Thanks everyone. It is nice to have a place to ask before you go and try something that might make matters worse. Forgive me if I implied in any way that there anything wrong with the Aero seat. I love them and will buy more. Heck, now it is shiny instead of matte and looks even better against the carbon tube grip:)

P.S. Just ordered some of the NFC grips. Anyone know tenon size and if they mate up well with the Aero seat? NFC hasn't had a chance to respond to my email yet about this.

Should fit the 17 mm size just fine.
