Sand down reel seat?

I bought a Angler's workshop kit and it came with a grip that is way flared out on the butt end. It's 3 mm larger than the reel seat hood. Should I be concerned about that? Every other rod I have built had a grip that was correctly sized. If I want to sand it down is there a best way to do it and keep it round without a lathe? The only thing I can think of is to put it over something like a drill bit in a high speed drill and hold a sanding block up to it. Which sounds like a bad idea.

You might watch the flex-coat videos, not sure if they'd solve your problem, but they may help.

The grip end should be the same or larger in OD than the seat. You may be OK.

It just irks me because it just doesn't look right and I'm concerned about chipping it if it gets whacked from behind. Weird that all the other grips I have bought were more or less exactly the diameter of the hood. Maybe I just got lucky.

Yeah, I'm lost also. Insufficient info. I may have spoken too soon as I will sometimes do . Lol The question asks "sand down seat?" but it sounds as if the grip is too big. Define hood.

I'm with Lynn .... grip is either ahead of, or behind the reel seat. I understand that you grip a reel seat, but I've never heard or seen it called a grip.

Timothy,
Actually, in past years, I have had several clients who made the special request to flare the butt of the rod for personal reasons.

I own a couple myself that I enjoy using very much.

You night build such a rod and see how it works for you.

I happen to like the design for certain purposes.

Best wishes

It sounds like you are talking about a Full Wells fly rod grip. If so, the flare is the normal design for Full Wells. It also needs to be larger diameter so that recessed seats can be accomodated.

If this is the case, thousands if not millions of these grips are in or have been use.
