Hello. I was curious if anybody has built a rod for fishing off the jetty. Specially the Gulf of Mexico, TX. Any input is appreciated. I’m thinking that it should be 9’ to 10’ , spinning, and a 2 piece. Ideally it can handle the average of local species... snapper, speckled trout,reds, Spanish mackerel. Any advice on action/ power appreciated, as well as blank manufactures.

If you are not using heavy weights or fishing heavy current, I like the Rainshadow RX7 9’ or 9 1/2’ salmon rods in a MH to H action. I use these rods for fishing some inlets and beaches in the Florida panhandle, and for spillway striper fishing. They are quite light, cast great, and are fun to fish.

Thank you Norm. The jetty I have started to frequent is surfside in Galveston. It has some descent currents and winds. My buddy uses and 9 ft salmon rod that he used to use up in michigan. Seems to work well for action etc, but cant really handle the weights when the current is moving. So far we have just been popping cork and drifting shrimp. However, I was looking for something that would be able to handle most applications. Maybe I need to have two different setups.

Thanks for the heads up Herb. More than I'm willing to pay as I don't fish the jetty frequently enough to justify the cost. However, I really appreciate the response. Thanks again.

In Florida jetty fishing can involve hooking up with redfish up to 50 pounds, sharks up to 80 pounds, and tarpon up to 200 pounds. I always over-gun with hundreds of yards of #50 gel-spun braid on my beach/jetty bait rods because even though I release wormy, inedible fish I prefer releasing them to losing them.

Looks like I'm going to have to change to fishing piers and jetty stuff myself. I find myself asking what is the difference between a surf, pier, bridge, and jetty rod.

Normally I'd think of a surf rod as being the stronger rod to handle casting heavier weights. Yet in my waters the surf is pretty calm and mostly sand bottom. The jetty and bridge fishing has very strong currents and lots of rocks. On piers you need to control the fish around the pilings and muscle/flip him onto the pier.

So for my waters I could see a salmon or steel head blank working for a surf rod as long as it would get the distance you need. For the other stuff I think I'd want a lot tougher and more powerful rod.

But hey, what do I know as these are pretty much uncharted fishing waters for me:)
