Aloha Everyone. I have heard mention of a thread finish used by mass producing rod builders that is activated/hardened by UV light. I did multiple searches here and nothing came up. Is there such a product available?

Diamondite I believe the finish was called that used to be a sponsor here, maybe 5 - 6 years ago. Didn't need a special light, an incandescent bulb was enough if I remember right.

The Cork4US folks offered such a thing for a long time.

I was at the lumber yard the other day and there was one type of plywood that had 4 coats of UV cured finish on the wood. A really stellar product.

Dentist's have been using UV cured adhesives for some years, with excellent results.

However, I personally have not seen a product in action to be used on fishing rods for the thread wraps. I have seen a few videos of products used in the past with less than perfect results. However, I would not be surprised if there is such a product on the market that would work very well.

I have used UV cured adhesives fr everything from Fiber-optic cable termination, to my own fishing flies. The adhesives are strong, crystal clear, and can be purchased thick, or thin, flexible, or hard. Solarez is one such brand of UV adhesive. I believe that UV adhesives aren't generally used for thread wraps as they are expensive. Epoxies are much more cost effective, but require significant time to cure. Yes, there are 5 minute epoxies, but they are just not as strong, nor do they give time for proper bubble release.

So yes, you can use UV adhesives for low, or high build. But it will be pricey.
