Hiya folks, any reason(s) not to run single foot running guides on a 10'6 downrigger rod for Bouy 10 salmon (RS BP1266).

Gonna give a spiral wrap a shot for giggles.

Also for conventional reels, would you run a seat with or without a trigger?

For myself, any time that I build a casting rod, I much prefer the use of a reel seat with a trigger. For myself, I just have more gripping power with the use of a trigger enhanced reel seat.

I don't imagine you will be doing a lot of casting with that RDR. Use a trigger seat if you like but ensure you won't have any problem getting it in or out of the rod holder. As for the singles, use em' if you like, but make sure you use a locking wrap. I know guys that fish 10 use a lot of weight sometimes and that should influence your guide choice.

Also an excellent choice for a spiral and not just for giggles. You'll like it.

If I was using a larger diameter round reel on the rod, something I can't palm, I would use the pipe style reel seat with no trigger. I use a lot of singlefoot guides on my trolling rods because some of them may be used as salmon float rods also. I spiral wrap my rods and use double foot guides for the spiral, some of my customers have bent the single foot guides when used in the near butt area, so I just use double foots there now, though I never had any problems myself on earlier rods. I don't believe they were bent while fishing as my earlier rods haven't been and they were built years earlier.

I was looking at the blueprints on the Batson site for the BP1266 to get some ideas too.

Grant makes a good point on the use of weight, from what I gather and talking with a few guides; up 20oz is possible pending tidal and wind movements.

Hard for me to envision a single foot guide being pulled out and off the blank while on the troll with heavy lead and I agree a locking wrap for a insurance is a must.

@ Spencer I was thinking the same about reel size and reel seat fit into the rod holder. I havent trolled B10 before and I see a lot of capture-style rod holders which I haven't used either hence going with a pipe style reel seat.

My inner weight weenie has always gravitated to the lightest of the light; titanium guides etal hence my thoughts of using titanium single foot runners

But looking at 2x foot titanium guides + extra thread + epoxy isn't really too much weight considering the rod isn't held in hand all day.

And 2x foot guides do add a measure of durability in the heat of battle!

Your preference on the guides,but having gone spiral I would do that exclusively with trolling rods. Have fun,my buddy is fishing Buoy 10 this morning.

If you are using that blank as a downrigger, it will be spending most of it's time in a rod holder. I'm not sure that less thread and titanium guides is of any advantage. You won't notice a difference in weight when that 30 pounder cranks the rod to the water nor when you are tugging that fish to the boat with 10-20 oz's of lead. Batson's recipes are generally spot on as far as guide sizes and spacings, but the component choice is yours. Instead of titanium, look at the aluminum oxide inserts from Alps. Excellent quality, won't break the bank and will most certainly hold up to what the Big C has to offer! I've never used a pipe seat, but an 18 will hold just about any reel, fits the blank and is comfortable in the hand. My 2 cents.

Use it as a mooching and plunking rod also.
