I shipped a 7.5 ft. fly rod to a customer in Montana USPS. He called to tell me it arrived broken. The pics showed it snapped about 2 inches above the grip. I need to file a claim. My question is, What do you use for a comparison Price? They want documents for proof of value.

You will more than likely get compensated for materials. They push back on labor. I have done better by getting quotes and "appraisals" from other rod builders. @#$%& and been there. Save reciepts, copy everything, and hope you had insurance.

What did your customer pay you for the rod? Do you have a copy of the invoice or receipt? That should be all you need.

If you insured it - they will pay your stated amount. You paid for the insurance - after all.

They won't necessarily pay the insured amount. They will pay "up to" the insured amount, with proof of value. Whatever you sold the rod to your customer for, should be considered the value.

Send them the bill for the rod that you have built for the customer and have presented to the customer.

That is the value of the loss. I assume that this was also the value for which you paid for insurance as well?

You paid so much money for XXX dollars of insurance. You should be paid XXX dollars, since that was the loss incurred.

Insurance is typically purchased in block amounts. So much for say, $500 upper limit, more for perhaps $1000 upper limit. So on and so forth. So if you purchased $500 worth and a $300 rod is broken or lost, you get $300, not $500.

Yes, I have a copy of the receipt.

It was shipped in a cardboard tube that I received 3 rod blanks in from one of the companies to the left.

The package was insured.
