Hi guys, just wondering if there is a standard length to make the lathe centerline back from the bench edge on a rodbuilding lathe? Or is it just what ever feels comfortable to the individual.

You need to consider what you might want to lie on the edge of any table width that extends from the bed back to that edge. Does the thread carriage need to be off the edge of the table in order to function freely?
You can take a look at the photo page under equipment and tools and possibly get some ideas from what others have done. ............. Re: Lathe centerline?

Scott,
For myself, and my current power wrapper that uses a thread carriage behind the wrapper, I place the wrapper bed 1 inch behind the front edge of the rod bench surface. I essentially want the rod about as close as possible to me to minimize reach and vision issues. I have several different wrapper beds that I use for building rods. Long ones, short ones, fat ones and skinny ones. But the recipe is the same - inch back from the front edge of the bench top. [www.rodbuilding.org] Re: Lathe centerline?
