If I want to use one of the burl rings for the end of the fighting but, what is the best way to fill in the 1/4 hole. Do I just cut a piece of cork and glue it in the hole, sand it all down when turning the handle. Thanks Re: Filling in the hole in cork rings

You can do this one of several aways. Plug the hole with a plug of similar cork. Use a non-bored ring to start with (will be harder to ream and size the fit the butt) or take some cork grindings, mix with epoxy and stuff the paste into the open end then sand flat once cured.

Keith,
I have done it both ways. i.e. use a piece of solid cork for the butt cap. Or, use a standard burled ring with a typical hole in it. Then, I use a plug cutter to cut a plug that is larger than the hole in the end of the cork ring. I then, take the plug and turn it to put a slight taper on the plug. Finally, I take epoxy to put the plug into the hole and sand down the protruding piece of cork. Example of the plug cutter that I use: [www.rodbuilding.org] [www.harborfreight.com] Example of my disk sander . I also mounted a cross vice in front of the disk so that I could clamp the grip into the cross vise and then use the disk sander to get a perfect 90 degree finish on the end of the grip. I've used all above, and they all work fine. You might be surprised at how little you look at that butt end of the rod after it's done and you're fishing with it. One other option is to get a rubber interior trim fastener from OReilly Auto Parts that has about a 5/8 in OD, with a barb. Slip a foam hearing protection device into the blank to stop the epoxy you'll stuff in, sand and size the barb properly to fit (sanding takes of any mold release agent that might be there), and slip it onto the butt, with epoxy on the back of the butt and in the hole You'll get some of it squeezing out, carefully take it off with alcohol. Keep an eye on it as the alcohol evaporates to see if there still is some epoxy outside where you want it. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
