Reversing direction on dryer motor

I have a variable speed ( 0-45rpm) 24 volt dryer and would like to change the direction so it runs backwards, can I just reverse the leads that are attached to the back of the motor. Tried looking it up on line but some say yes and no. Re: Reversing direction on dryer motor

On my drying motor I just grab it and it goes the other way. But it is a 10rpm AC drying motor Re: Reversing direction on dryer motor

NOTE: The following comments apply ONLY to a DC motor. Is your 45 rpm 24 volt motor an AC motor or a DC motor? If it is a DC motor - simple as shown below. An ac motor - not so much . This is the primary reason why all of the power wrappers that I have built for myself over the years have all used DC motors. i.e. easy to reverse. Same with dryer motors - DC for easy reverse. In spite of the other comments - For a DC motor, one simply reverses the power leads and the motor reverses its direction. As a matter of fact, I just finished another dryer today that uses just such a motor that you mention. Here is a dryer that I made some years ago, using a DC motor that has a top speed of 50 rpm. I Have incorporated a reversing switch into the control box, that simply swaps the power leads that go to the motor. This dryer also employs a variable speed control that will vary the speed from 0 rpm to 50 rpm. [www.rodbuilding.org] Re: Reversing direction on dryer motor

ops, I did fail to mention it’s a DC motor, I think i’ll add a switch as it would be nice to change directions. My 9rpm dryer is AC and you can just grab it and change direction. Roger on your 50rpm motor is that direct drive, I was thinking about converting my 45rpm to a faster speed with a larger motor as it has a really small motor with 5 small gears to the final drive.

In case you need a picture on how to wire a (double pole, double throw, switch) here is a link: [www.vegoilguy.co.uk] As a matter of fact, I just wired up one last night. Note: On many switches that have tabs for terminals, it is generally to your advantage to obtain push on electrical connectors, and then crimp the wires into the connectors before pushing on the terminals. These typical switches are made for these connectors and they do not solder very well. If you happen to purchase a switch that has brass colored soldering terminals with an eye in the lug, then soldering is the way to go for assembly. -------------------------- Connector for example: [www.te.com] The red connector are for a single smaller wire like 22 gauge to 18 gauge If it is a blue connector it is sized for larger wire, or multiple wires from 18 gauge on up to 14 gauge. If it is a yellow connector it is larger still and is sized for several wires or wire up to 10 or possibly 8 gauge wire. Hardware stores or Home Depot or similar stores carry these connectors. For a reversing switch, I personally prefer the use of a rocker switch, as opposed to a toggle switch. The rocker switch simply is more convenient and is easier to use.
