Alps power wrapper for turning cork

So how does this work, I tried putting a reamer in the jaws of the chuck( the upgraded one) and there is no way that is going to work, no support what so ever on the reamer. I dont have the steel mandrels yet, ordered that and the live tailstock but wondering does anyone have one of these that they use for turning cork. I am wondering if I would be better off with a wood lathe from like harbor freight. Thank you.

Keith,

Some folks do get the wrapper to work after spending a bunch of time and tweaking on the unit.

However, one is much much much better off getting a dedicated wood lathe that has been designed from the get go to take care of turning chores.

Many of the lathes on the market do not come with a jaw type head stock chuck. Rather, they just sell the lathe with a face plate that can be used for some types of turning. So, if you do purchase a lathe, be sure to be willing to expect to buy some accessories - with respect to a better 3 jaw chuck and you may also want to purchase a live tail stock and or tail stock chuck if you wish to do some center face drilling in objects where you want the hole to be perfectly centered.

To me, turning cork or anything else on a wrapper/finisher/rod lathe or whatever you want to call it DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE. Under powered, not supported correctly, and most of all making a big dirty mess in the same space that you want to be super clean when you wrap and finish your rod. I don't get it. Separate spaces, separate equipment. Think wood shop VS. clean room.

That is how we do it.
