The physical characteristics of fishing lines vary widely depending upon their diameter, their composition (monofilament or braid, nylon, fluorocarbon, dacron or gelspun) and even the ambient temperature. Should the ideal size, placement, and brand of guides vary according to these differences or does one size, style, and brand fit all?

If you wish to use the less supple Mono lines, the guides need to be larger to handle the stiffer line - compared to braid.

But, if using braid or similar line exclusively, you can reduces the guide sizes substantially, particularly the first and 2nd guides on spinning rods.

Because many fisher folks use multiple lines on the same rod, and if the builder is aware of this situation, go with the larger guide so that the customer is happy with any line that he/she chooses to use with the rod.

Roger: A healthy number of posts on this site recommend specific sizes, brands and model lines of guides without ever mentioning line type, line weight, or anticipated air or water temperature where rods/guides will be used - which greatly reduces the usefulness of guide suggestions.

And many more suggest always considering line type and size, along with the climate range a rod will be used in. Any halfway decent rod builder should be able to weigh the line and environmental factors against any guide set suggestions.

The material Anglers Resource publishes on the Fuji KR Concept system for spin (on their website and in the catalog) is a great example of how line type has been considered in guide recommendations. Most posters asking for recommendations state in their post what type and pound test line they plan to use.
