Heddon Pal - line guides

Good Morning all,

<<HELP>>

In the collection of old rods and reels that my father left me was a Heddon Pal rod. I am in the process of refurbishing the rod. The line guide wraps are totally rotted so I cannot put a fresh coat of line guide seal on them. When I removed the line guides last night I discovered one of the guide foot was broken. I thought "no worries" I will just order some new ones that look reasonably close to the originals. So far I have not found any on the internet sites that I order from. The line guides are all double footed casting guides and I need......... 1 each size 4 - 2 each size 5 - 1 each size 6. Looking for someone to direct me to a good online shop to purchase these guides.

Thank you much.....................

Mully

Does the rod have a number on it? I believe they put numbers for what model rod line it was. I can look at pictures on line and may be able to tell what guides they used by that number. How are you coming up with the ring size (or guide size)? If you measure the outer frame of the ring in millimetres that will be the correct ring size for the guide. The guide sizes you mentioned seem a bit small for vintage fishing rods.

Lance,

I am at work right now.....:) So I do not have the actual model number.
However, after I removed the line guides last night I measured the inside diameter on my line guide measuring tool.
They do look small though I will give you that.

Mully,
These are from Mudhole on the left; Fuji SV Double foot guides. From the web I found photos of some of the casting rods from Heddon Pal. When I first started building rod I used these 30 years ago and they look like what is in the photos. [www.mudhole.com]

Your line guide measuring tool may be giving you fly guide sizes. If the rod is from the 50s, 60s or even early 70s the guides probably did not have a ceramic ring, and were all metal guides. If they did have ceramic rings I’m pretty sure most of those guides used back then are no longer made. If you can post a picture of the guides someone may have them in their old guide stashes.

Lance thank you............

Norman,
I just recently got into building and refurbishing fishing poles. I used to make my own ice fishing rods 40 years ago but never had the proper tools (functional not pretty). The gauge I used I purchased from MudHole about 6 months ago is this one: [www.mudhole.com] . Last night I checked them again to verify the size. I also checked for a model number but all I can find is the Patent # that is on the bottom of the reel seat. You are correct in the fact the guides are all metal. I will post some pictures tonight.

I appreciate all the help.

That gauge is very useful tool it measures in both 1/64 of an inch and in mm, so you have a good tool. However, when you gave guide sizes as 4, 5, and 6 most of us were thinking of fly guide sizes. Because back in the day your rod as made, casting/spinning guides of those sizes in mm were not used to my knowledge. I’m thinking the smallest guide might be a size 6 or 8 and the largest a size 10 or 12, and looked something like this. [www.mudhole.com]

All,

Thank you.
Was able to find line guides that are "almost" exact copies.
Finished it up last night and it really looks great.
(now on to the next one)
