Recommended guides for wire line trolling. Lake Ont. Any suggestions?

Lots of folks use silicone carbide guides for good years of service.

Silicone Nitride ringed guides also, Fuji is the only supplier of that material I'm aware of.

I just built two Rain Shadow blanks using the silicon nitride guides in spiral wrap with slick grips for wire line on Lake Ontario. Still on lock down on the Canadian side, can't get out to try them.

What kind of wire? Copper is a lot softer than monel. I like the old-school deep trolling methods - especially the no-rod system using a wind-up record player with a spool fastened to the turntable.

30 pound stainless 7 strand wire line. Used to connect to a dipsy diver.

I think you could get just as deep using gel-spun braid with your dipsy diver. That would make guide selection relatively easy?

There is something about the harmonics of SS wire that makes it more productive than braid on dipsys. I have found the same thing with a downrigger ball set up with a wire cable vs braid. For some reason the wire catches more fish, I’m assuming the vibration.

The main reason for wire line on Lake Ontario is the water fleas. Braid is fine until the fleas show up as the water warms. They cling to the braid and you end up with pipe cleaner all the way down the line that clogs the tip. Wire line saws right through them.

Thats frickin interesting.. Ive womdered why they would use wire.. Also for the record he uses copper, monel and SS.. Hes a interesting guy to fish with lol

Bill: Why not single-strand stainless? A single-strand of any kind of wire will troll a lot deeper than a braided wire of the same strength, and compared to single strand a braided wire is a water-flea magnet. I know about kinks, but a careful troller can avoid them.
