American made?

About what percentage of rod blanks sold in the U.S.A. were made in the U.S.A. - if anyone is keeping track? Is there any U.S. maker of what I believe is called pre-peg: the cloth that is used to make blanks?

Phil,
In my structural composite hay-day, there were a number of U.S. CF, FG and aramid weavers, some of which produced pre-preg as well. Hexcel was the dominate one in the U.S. and probably still is. Over the past 15 years or so, the Japanese company, Toray, has become a world-wide respected manufacturer of CF, possibly more dominate than Hexcel.
Soller Composites used to be a weaver and Jon Soller has expressed interest in taking it up again. He has been in the composite industry for quite some time and would be a valuable source to answer your question more thoroughly. Give him a call.

Most, if not all have ties to foreign manufacturing, so made in America usually means assembled in America. There is usually a pretty good chance that the epoxy resins in the prepreg are made solely in America.

Thanks, Mark. In the absence of any factual information about rod blanks - "fast" "tough" "soulful" "smooth" "responsive" "light" "sensitive" "powerful" etc. are NOT physical properties - it's tough to find the "best" rod blank - the one you or your customer wants - assuming your goal is to catch fish rather than impress onlookers.
