Re-wrapping a St. Croix Ben Doerr 8 1/2 " Surf Rod rated for 6-14 # Test Line up to 1 1/4 oz lures.
The rod is at least 20 years old and had 5 clunky double foot guides on it. Stripped everything off and am now ready to re wrap.
I have Two sets of Forecast VS 3 Titanium Guides sizes (30 25 20 16 12 10 8) that I purchased years ago ( Very Expensive )
I would like to use the guides I have but am torn between using the COF layout or New Concept system. This will not be my main rod but used occasionally
for throwing metal in the Florida Surf and Frogs and Poppers for Bass and Pike in Black Lake NY. Will be using 3500 to 4000 size reels with
20# Braid and15# Mono. Was thinking about going with 25 16 12 10 10 8 8 guide layout. Any Thoughts or advice would be appreciated .

Thanks
Rick

Been rethinking this setup.... maybe going with a modified concept layout using 25 16 12 8 VS 3 Guides and either 5 or 6 ( 5.5 or 6 mm ) running guides.
Probably work well with either Braid or Mono ???????
Thanks

The best way is to let the line path tell you what size guides to use. Otherwise you may have to adjust your spacing to less than desired for adequate stress distribution.

At any rate, I don't think you need to use so many different sized guides.

Played around with the guide setup. Used the X27 system. Placed the choker guide 55" from the reel spool. 26" to tip top from choker 4 3/8 " spacing to tip. Additional 5 guides to the Tip Top 6 guides total.
Choker Guides and running guides CRB LZR #8 ring, Tip Top CRB LZR Med Duty #8 ring.
Stripper Guide, Reduction Guides all VS3 Titanium single foot guides 30-20-16--10, Total guides 10 plus Tip Top.
Load Distribution right excellent. Casting distance with 1 oz wobble Jig, outstanding. 4000 Size Reel 20# braid.
