Quick question....

I’m installing a nickel winding check with a thread underwrap. I was thinking of putting a light coat of epoxy on the thread before I install the winding check. Then after I install the winding check do a finish coat of epoxy on the thread. Does that make sense? Any other suggestions?

You could - but why?

You could if you have a big enough winding check, just remember to not drop the winding check down the blank, lower it by hand. If you let it drop, many have sharp edges that can cock and grab the blank, a real pain to get them to come off and you're guaranteed to have left a mark on the blank.

I don't see the need to add epoxy prior to the winding check. It will just add more weight and may prevent you from putting the winding check flush against the rod/grip. If you are worried about the threads, add some cp for the adhesive properties.

Are you doing this because the winding check has a larger ID than the rod has an OD where you're putting the winding check and you're afraid it isn't going to be centered? It sounds like maybe that is your case.

If it is the case, I have done a couple things to alleviate the issue you may be having, I have either put down a coat of "high build" in the area to make the rod diameter larger or added a piece of "shrink wrap" to add to the diameter.

There are no bad ideas and experimentation is the name of the game!

Your idea of adding thread to the area works, and if you coat it or, as Ken suggested, put down some CP to the thread to keep it in place.

I was putting the thread to center and take up some space but not bind on the blank. I have a size smaller that I could use and put a wrap and trim in front. Using the smaller size will work. But was experimenting with an underwrap.

I use aluminum winding checks now for all my fly rod builds. I was using nickle ones up to about 2001 then switched to the aluminum due to weight savings. It seams like there are a lot of fly rod components that are unnecessarily heavy. To me, especially if the fly rod is somewhat over weight then the balance needs to be spot on or it will wear you out. If you have winding checks that would fit without shoring up with thread, I would use those.
