A couple of friends of mine want me to build a rod to use in very deep water for use with electric reels. The rods must be 9 ft and able to hold 5 lbs. of lead in 300 ft of water.Any blank suggestions?

The rods mentioned above are being used in the Dry Tortugas.

Call Batson Enterprises, on the left. Blank suggestions and blueprints. That's a popular type of rig for halibut and big ling cod in the Pacific Northwest. Good people, good product, good pricing.

Hello Peter.

You say 9' with 5#'s lead, and electric reels, but you don't say what size & type of fish sought or the type of butt you want to use.

With the info you have given all I can think of is a

CRB Gator 10'0" XX-Heavy Fiberglass Rod Blank - Shark

SKU: #Shark

$99.95

10'0" | 80-130 lb. | Slow Action | 2X Heavy Power | 1 Piece | 28.0 Tip | 1.3 Butt | Black Spiral Finish.

With this you can tie your 5#'s lead to the tip and slowly move it down till you get the action you want, then cut off the tip there, measure down to 9' cut butt.

Hope this helps.

Tight Wraps & Tighter Lines.

I presume the rod will remain in a holder while the electric reel winches the line out and in. If this is the case the weight and action of the rod are of no importance; only its strength. I would recommend the blank with the greatest load-bearing ability (breaking point) at a 90 degree angle to its axis.
