Musky Fly Rod Blank

I am looking at building a 10 weight rod for musky fishing streamers. I have a Sage and an echo but want a dedicated rod with a longer butt around 4 -5 inches... Any blank and component recommendations are appreciated... Thanks Scott

Rear cork from a spey rod ok? Batson has a full line in composite design that would dress it up a bit. Don't remember the length though.

Our head designer, who used to do the same in Wisconsin, would use either of our RainShadow Eternity 10wt ETEF9010-4 ( [www.rainshadowrodblanks.com] ) or the Revelation REVF9010-4 ( [www.rainshadowrodblanks.com] )

Scott,
Does that mean that you want a 10'6" #10 blank?
Or - will you use the bottom 4-5" of the blank for the grip - thereby shortening the effective length of the rod?
Or - will you build a removable 4-5" extension using say - REC removable fighting butt hardware?

I was thinking a 9 foot rod with a 4-5 inch fixed butt. A 9'6" blank would be fine too. I am fairly new at building rods so all info is good info for me...I saw a very cool rod built with winn grips and a one piece 8'10" blank by chippewa river rods.

Ocean-going anglers fight and land tarpon and even tuna weighing over 100 pounds on fly rods. Perhaps one of them will share his or her preference in rod butts with you. There is no substitute for personal experience.

If going Rainshadow I would go with the Eternity, which most likely will be a faster action than the Rev. Faster is better in wind and bigger flies. But I don't have the specs on the Rev vs Eternity-would be nice to compare the numbers on AA.

I use an Eternity 8 wt, son has Eternity 9, like them very much.

Scott,
Sorry about the rod length comments - I saw 10 and saw feet.
I assume that you want a longer fighting butt so your reel hand doesn't hit your belly - or catch in your shirt. 'I would go with a 9'0" CTS Affinity-X and build a 4" fighting butt o the blank. No real need for anything over that. I would opt for 2.5-3.0" for myself. But if you want longer - that is your call. Muskies don't run or sound all that much - just sort of splash around - especially when caught doing the figure 8.
Since you will be doing a lot of casting the shorter effective length of the rod - shortened by the fighting butt length - will make it a little easier for you.
Contact me if you want pricing details - and recommended guides and seats.
