Dura Gloss problem

I am having a situation with my dura gloss. It seems not to be hardening! I have had three instances where this has happened. It gets kind of a soft finish. I am very careful to mix it properly. What am I missing.

It almost has to be mix ratio problem from everything I have read. It is said that you need to mix at least 3cc's of each part to ensure you get an accurate reading or some such thing. I guess it could also be a mixing time problem. Maybe try stirring for a full 5 minutes on the next mix. Or is just very cold there? Maybe you need to allow more time for it to set. Just guessing you understand.

I have mixed 3cc and this has happened. I mix it for several minutes and it still happens. I have had better luck mixing 1 cc. Yes it's cold in the garage but I bring it in the house as soon as it sets up enough to stand up, but it had done the same thing when weather was nice.

If you are certain that you are mixing an accurate amount of each part, and you are also certain that you are mixing thoroughly, and you are doing this in an area which we could call normal room temperature (65F to 80F)and you are still getting finish that won't harden - better to get a new kit. Finish typically can't go "bad" but in your case something is obviously amiss.

I wonder though, what you mean by a "soft" finish. If it is not tacky, then it most likely is hardening properly. Some finishes cure harder than others. Can you press a fingerprint into it? Or is it one of those situations where you can dent it with a thumbnail? That last one is quite common on many finishes.

The new LS Supreme cures fairly hard but for the first week or so I can easily dent it with a thumbnail if I apply enough pressure. AMTAK sells a finish that cures out very hard and cannot be dented with a thumbnail. It is also very clear and did well in the test we did in RodMaker last year. It has a short pot life however, so you have to move a bit quicker when working with it.

I have been using the supplied syringes to measure out and a brush to apply. I am going to try a flat stiff applicator on my next rod.
