rod finish

I have never coated a rod blank with finish since an (unsuccessful) attempt to revive a bamboo fly rod many decades ago. What is the goal of covering a graphite blank with clear finish, or any finish?

To make it pretty to some people, it doesn't need any finish. Gary Loomis once told me about the difference in weight with a bare blank, I believe it was 3 to 5 percent. You never want to coat a blank in epoxy, it is much heavier and restricts the performance of the blank.

I coated a old rod with finish that I put blue powder pigment in it .The rod is now a good looking rod style verses performance . Plus it gave me something to do one winter. and I learned I had to put the rod dryer on a 30 degree angle to get the extra finish to roll off to get a lite coat.

As stated above, appearance. Really brings out the beauty of the carbon fiber. A minor side advantage is that the gloss finish doesn't show imperfections in the edges of the wraps as much as gloss epoxy on a matte finish blank.
