I just wanted to say thanks to the rod building vocation, I was able to put a smile on a young man's face yesterday.

It was not a big thing, but it worked out very well due to the knowledge and resources that I had on hand due to the participation in rod building.

We had a young man visiting yesterday. He was a very good guitar player and singer but he had a problem.

One of the pins that were used to hold the bottom of one of the strings in his guitar had broken. He asked for help.

After dinner we went out to the shop and I found just what I was looking for. It was a piece of a solid graphite ice rod blank that was in my misl. box.

I took some dimensions with the caliper of the hole size and then used the lathe to turn him a new guitar string pin from solid graphite.

Perfect fit. He put in the new string, pushed the pin home and then proceeded to tighten the string and tune the guitar and sing a few songs.

Thanks again to the rod building vocation to have the parts and knowledge on hand to help this young man.

Roger, It might be worthwhile to turn a complete set and compare the sustain and brightness of the tone. I know that ivory was used before being banned and a synthetic is used for end pins, but I'm not aware of graphite being used. You just might have something there.

Rod building has helped me many many times on diffrent scenarios, as well as fly tying, i agree with dennis danko, you should give that a try, if anything, it wouls give a unique sound... Might want to change the bridge at the headstock too, it would be easy if you have solid stock.. And go figure.. Now i want to get my bass out and start beating the strings again lol

Roger , I dont know why but I had you mixed up with a builder in the Phoenix area and his name isn't even Roger . I am such a ditz sometimes it scares me ! lol
His name is Ron and you both have helped me immensely and for that I thank you both .
