When refurbishing guides on a older rod would applying a coat of UV40 give its own a new look. If so do you apply before wrapping or after, and how many coats?....Thanks Steve

If you are talking about U-40 Permagloss as the finish, I apply 2 coats or so before wrapping by wiping on. Do a search a lot of information on how to apply it, just do the search for all dates.

Thanks Norm I did mean permagloss. I was thinking of applying it with a foam brush like Tom Kirkman's carbon fiber video.

The trouble with a foam bush method while turning is getting around the rod supports holding the rod in place. However this method does work well, if you make sure to cover the bare area left around the rod support. I find it much easier and quicker to wipe on the finish using a foam cosmetic pad, or a piece of cheese cloth or a coffee filter, they all work and are lint free. Basically just saturate the applicator with Permagloss and use a nitrile gloved hand to tightly hold and pull the applicator down the blank. This will squeegee the finish on giving a very thin and light coat, and only takes a few seconds to do it this way. The blank then can be propped up against the wall to cure, and you can recoat in less than an hour. Because the coat is so thin you don’t have to worry about it running.

Norm gave me the same advice two years ago and it has never failed me.

If you use a foam brush, you will not want to use it like a brush. Use it as an applicator, fully loaded, with one swipe down the blank, turn the blank 180 degrees and swipe it down again. The entire process should take less than 10 seconds. Go top to bottom with the tip of the blank held by hand or from some attachment method, in a straight down fashion. No rod supports.
