Recently I have been given a honey colored fiberglass surf rod to clean up and replace the guides . The rod blank is really dirty from forty years of use. My question is if anyone has cleaned up one of these kind of blanks what did you use on it? Under the cork it has a nice shiny finish and I hope to achieve the same results on the rest of the rod.

Really simple.
Simple green cleaner and a scrub brush and a tooth brush.

If Rogers suggestion above doesn't do the trick,

1. The old standby that cleans most everything, Bleach. I use a spray bottle of Clorox Clean Up for a lot of things like you are talking about.

2. If you need to get heavier, a light solution (1 cup to a gallon of water) of Muriatic acid in a pump sprayer. By the way, I use this same solution to get rid of rust stains on the floor of my fiberglass boat when a hook goes astray on my boat and rusts out.

3. If you want to get "serious", "Easy Off Oven Spray" . Follow the directions on the can.

Home depot sells a great cleaner called "30 second" it has a bleach base. Great for cleaning mildew from driveways and rain gutters etc..

By the way, if you use either bleach or acid - at a 100% level or diluted, do yourself a favor and use a squeeze bottle as opposed to a pump.

Both bleach and acid tend to quickly seize up and or destroy a pump, but a squeeze bottle continues to function well.
