If you are going to put a spinning reel on the ice rod, be sure that your first or stripper guide is tall enough. You don't necessarily need a very larger guide, but it is nice to have a taller guide. Ice rods are so short that in some cases, a builder might put the stripper at a distance of 10 inches or less from the reel. To have a smooth reeling reel on the line take up, you pretty much need to have the center of your stripper guide to bullseye with the center of your spinning reel spool. If the stripper guide is too low and you are retrieving a fish, the reel will feel herky jerky because the line will be going from the top to the bottom of the guide as it is spooled in.
But, if the guide is taller as in a match guide, with the center of the guide inline with the center of the spinning reel spool, the line will be retrieved equally as the line goes around the spool during a retrieve.
Then, after the stripper, the guide can get much lower and much smaller quickly because, the only guide that needs to be tall, is the stripper guide to prevent the erratic line retrieve on a taunt line.
Remember, for a lot of ice fishing rods, you only need 2 or 3 guides plus the tip top.
For example, a sight rod is typically only 15 inches long and that includes 5 inches for the grip.
