Some reel seats do not feature a second, "locking" ring, and sometimes even that second locking ring backs off during use and the reel flops around on the rod or, worse, falls off the rod completely. I always build with double reel seat rings behind the reel, and before I glue up the grip and reel seat I always insert BETWEEN the threaded metal keeper rings a neoprene rubber "O" ring sized to be snug around the threaded tube. This O ring compresses between the metal rings on the reel seat and will not allow the reel seat to loosen unless I deliberately unscrew it.

Hey Phil, where to you get those O rings? I have two locking rings on my favorite fly rod and both of them are backing off. Any ideas?

You can get neoprene O-rings at a plumbing supply store or at a hardware store. You might get an O-ring slightly larger than the diameter of the reel-seat barrel, immerse it in very hot water for a while to make stretching stretching it easier, and slide it over the rod butt and the the first locking ring. You MIGHT be able to stretch it enough and still have it contract enough to fit between the locking rings. The other, trickier option is to carefully heat the butt cap just enough so you can pull it out, unscrew the rear locking ring, slide on an O-ring, screw the rear locking ring back on, heat up some ferrule cement and use it to re-attach the rod butt.

You can also buy them on line. They are not expensive at all. The on line suppliers can supply different materials and any size you need.

Auto parts stores, industrial supply, gasket, and bearing stores all have orings of different materials and sizes.

You want to get the O-ring between the two locking rings. When you have the first ring firmly on the reel seat and then screw down the second locking ring you compress the rubber O-ring between the locking rings. This compression causes friction between the O-ring and the two locking rings and keeps them from moving.
