I normally remove tiptop by running a rubber band through the frame, attach the other end of the band to a vice and apply heat to the top with a heat gun. Normally they come right off. However this is not working on the Ugly Stick. I am afraid of overheating the glass. Any "tricks"?
Thanks Re: Removing Ugly Stick Tiptop

Quinn,
Apply more heat, just to the tip. If it doesn't come off, saw off the last 1/2 inch of the rod where the tip top is located. Be safe Re: Removing Ugly Stick Tiptop

Use a lighter so you can concentrate the heat only on the tip top. Re: Removing Ugly Stick Tiptop

The way I remove tips without cutting the blank is to use a Dremel with a mini cutoff wheel and carefully make two cuts along the length of the tip tube 180 degrees apart.
Go slow and cut very lightly being careful not cut into the blank. The tip can then be pried apart and removed. After the tip is removed I check to see if the blank is sound and proceed to prep it for the new tip. This method takes a lot of time but if you have only one or two to do then it is worth the effort. Good Luck John Re: Removing Ugly Stick Tiptop

Occasionally you will get one that someone else worked on and replaced using 2 part epoxy.
Unless it is "Quick-Cure", you may not be able to break the bond without damaging the blank. The only thing left is either cutting off that end of the blank, or trying the Dremel tool trick as John says. I simply cannot agree that cutting the blank off is the right solution. The Dremel may not be easy, but it's better than cutting the blank off. More heat is very risky. Take your time and do it right, Dremel. Re: Removing Ugly Stick Tiptop
