Folks, where can I find a comprehensive discussion of when to use regular nylon thread with or without color preserver, vs NCP nylon thread - pros and cons, etc.? Thanks in advance.

It's strictly personal preference.

Best is to wrap some samples and view your results. If you really want your wraps to Pop, Use CP. If your after a more subdue look, No color preserver.

The three choices give you results that must be observed to understand differences. Additionally, the color of the blank has an effect as well. As mentioned above, doing some test sampling yourself is a clear way to determine what you prefer.

And don't forget the trick of wetting the wrap with Alcohol to mimic what it will look like with finish on it.

don't forget to consider the blank color (or paint or silver tape) under the wrap
