Which epoxy product is going to give the smoothest finish going over a 1/2"x3" decal?

The one you're using for your guide wraps.

You can use the epoxy that your wrapping your guides but there is a great product out there called Perma Gloss. It is crystal clear and goes on very smooth. If you re using a light colored rod , like white. it will never turn yellow like epoxy will, and your decal will look terrific forever.

Not to dog a particular brand, but I am using a product on the guides and it comes out great but when I use the same product over a 3" span, it is coming out kind of wavy and not perfectly slick.

Just a suggestion. Put it on in thin coats, do not turn the rod like you would a guide wrap. But stroke the epoxy down the length of the decal.
Then gently heat it so it will flow as it turns drying.

Tom, you use Perma Gloss over decals? I have only tried it once and it was a disaster. Do only certain types of decals work? Maybe I did something wrong… I really like the product, but concluded it was pretty application-specific Would love to know if there is a trick or something I am missing...

Joseph... No trick to it.. labels that come with most rod blanks are very thin and present no issues. On my Pearl Lable 270 they are slightly thicker and I'll put some CP on the edges. I work it fairly fast since it dries quickly.

This is the first time I've ever read it recommended to use Permagloss over decals. In fact just the opposite. Not to doubt Tom, but I hope you have two decals. You can use one for a test.

As some others have mentioned i would just use whatever brand of epoxy you use to coat your guide wraps , comes out beautiful every time i have applied a decal and no yellowing whatsoever .

Courtesy of Decal Connection:

Before you begin the application process, place a thin coat of epoxy on the blank where you will be placing the decal and let dry.

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!

This step provides a flawless surface for the decal to adhere to. Without this step, we do not guarantee decal.

In most cases it only takes one coat of epoxy to cover and protect the decal.

Perma Gloss is very hot and can destroy some decals. Your wrap epoxy is the best solution. Wavyness is usually caused by applying too much epoxy.

To stop any un wanted effects on my decals I always place a piece of clear scotch tape over my decals before Applying any finish and once it is dry the tape will be invisible and you will get a perfect looking decal on your rod with no ink runs or bad effects at all.

Or put a coat of CP over the decal.

So, as long as a decal gets a coat of color preserver it's o.k. to Permagloss over it?

Yes. PermaGloss cannot harm what it cannot reach.

But also keep in mind that PermaGloss does not give quite the same look as epoxy. Experiment and see how you like it.
