The rubbing alcohol that you find in drug stores is only about 70% alcohol and does a very poor job of heating.

As Bob pointed out, go to your paint section in your big box store and pick up the alcohol there that is 100% alcohol and you will be set.

Be safe

The flame from 70 per cent alcohol heats up just as well on thread and skin. You can do a test at home by lighting 70 per cent and 100 per cent then place your finger in the flame of each one to test the temp difference. I'm being facetious please do not try that. The higher per cent alcohols do put off less soot residue.

If you can see the flame on your burner, you are running low grade alcohol.

With quality alcohol, the flame should be essentially invisible and virtually free of soot.

Unless you live in California. It has been banned there.

Chuck,
So, I suppose that you have to go to your local moon shine maker to get the pure 100% alcohol in California.
