Whats a good setup for 1000 islands?

Hey guys, i just got a call from a old friend who said hes going to be going to the 1000 islands in september... Im not sure if he wants me to build him a rod, or just pick him a good rod..

My question is, whats a good all around setup for these waters? Im assuming he isnt going to be fishing onterio.. Otherwise he would be getting a charter i would assume.. I have to pick his brain a little more on what type of fishing they plan on doing.. But i personally know nothing about the 1000 islands.. So and recommendations?

I dont really want to sent the poor guy up there with a sweet 5'6" UL made for creeks and find out i should have sent him with a 7' M spin jig setup if you guys catch my drift.. Lol

Well I started to answer assuming you were talking about Florida. I know nothing about 1000 islands in Canada. From Google seems like it is typical fresh water bass/pike/crappie/walleye/muskie with the majority of the fish under 5 pounds. I'd think the 7 foot ML spin jig sounds like a good all around choice.

What you need to do is get more information from him as to what he’ll be targeting and also you need to confirm from him whether you’re building him a rod or not.

One size does not fit all. Your perch rod will have trouble with muskies.

If fishing a mixed bag of crappies, sunnies, small mouth bass, walleye, and northerns, one can do very well with two rods.

One rod is a 6'6" medium action fast power for heavier lines and lures. One rod a 7' or 7'6" ML moderate action for other fish and other fishing techniques.

Best wishes.

If anyone knows that, i do phil.. I was thinking a 7' med. with a 6-12lb rating.. And a quick tip.. I tried explaining to him its better to go application specific.. I have 250$ to play with.. That includes my profits.. So doing 2 rods might be a bit over the limit.. I am getting a pfluger president 35 to match..

For walleye and smb in fairly deep water, which is very likely up there, my St Croix SCV 7 med power is my favorite. Tubes, jigs, snatching swim baits, handling big smb, does it all. I think a ML might be a little lacking on the power side. Rodgeeks has their Carbon 4's which are basically interchageable with it and significantly less money. IMHO.

7 ft. med. on the low end. Med-hvy might be better. Very healthy smallies up there, and if he has any sense that's what he'll be targeting.

They still dont know what they are going to be going for.. One guy wants to go for walleye, another wants to go for bass.. So who knows.. I figure a SJ would be a good all around.. Im trying to get him to get a 2nd rod as well... a little lighter, at a discounted price of coarse lol
