I’ve been thinking about trying my hand on some feather inlays on my next rod and wanted some guidance on how some of you approach it. I realize it is a detailed technique and wanted some tips and instructions on how to start. CP is used from what I’ve seen but if there is any other way to go I’d like to know that as well. I’ve looked at some of the beautiful pictures posted. Where do you get a few feathers to start with? Thanks for any help!

If you Google exotic feathers you will find many suppliers. Yes, CO is used to both soften the feather and assist in the placing upon the desired location. I find a CP wet soft brush best for maneuvering the feather upon it's location. It is a delicate process! Once in the desired location, let the CP dry overnight before applying the coating epoxy.

You could also try fly fishing shop , there you will find a huge assortment of feathers

Keep your first one rather simple. A very striking look is guinea fowl with small peacock (iridescent plumage feathers) , a thin "streamer in the background, candy apple thread, gold metallic trim on almost any color blank.

I do mine in separate layers, only one feather layer placed at a time. When you get them all placed don't be discouraged by some little nubbins sticking up. After you put your first coat of wrap finish on, cut them off and keep applying thin coats until it's smooth. You can sand in between coats, but don't sand through the finish.
