I believe that the process of making solid glass blanks is a combination of material pultrusion and centerless grinding.

i.e. the fiberglass material is mixed with resin at an appropriate ration and essentially squirted out a hole to form a long shaft which hardens. Then the shaft is cut to length and a process called centerless grinding is used to grind the tube to the necessary shape for a fishing rod blank.

Just imagine that you mix up a mix of glue with fiberglass resin into a cookie maker and then press the mixture out the hole to form an endless shaft the size of the hole in the box of material. Then, it is placed on a grinder the grinds the necessary taper to the shaft to form the rod blank.

Centerless grinding:

Good luck

A process termed "Pultrusion" in which a number of dry, continuous fibers are pulled through a bath of resin and then through a die. The die forces the bundle of wet fibers to conform to the shape you want to end up with, during this process the die is heated and will cure the resin to set the bundle of fibers into its final shape. After the composite comes out of the die, it is allowed to post-cure.

Javier

I believe the dies are custom made to form the shape needed They range from a simple plate with a hole or a multi section step down tubular die. You can see some examples at [www.libertypultrusions.com]
This site gives a good description of pultrusion.
