Greetings all! I am fairly new to rod building, and I have a question. My daughter has requested I build her a rod, and she specifically wants white EVA foam grip! I recommended against it, due to the likelihood of it getting very dirty very quickly, but she has her heart set on it. Is there a way to seal the EVA foam after shaping to prevent this from happening? I was thinking about using color preserver, or a spray urethane.... any suggestions please!

Due to the soft nature of EVA, it's hard to seal it with anything. The good news is that EVA cleans easily with soap and water, or in the worst of cases, a light sanding.

Just keep a bottle of Dawn dish soap and a small hand brush handy at the laundry tub. When, necessary, just give the rod a good rub a dub dub and it will sparkle again.

Also, have your daughter wear a pair of white knit gloves when using it. Keep a few pair when fishing and if a pair of gloves get dirty, put on a fresh pair.

One might laugh, but I use the white knit gloves all of the time when working in the garage and when doing cork turning. I nice way to keep both your hands clean and your work clean.

I buy the gloves by the dozen and keep them in my work shop as well as the garage.

The reason that I use the knit gloves is that they breathe but still keep the hands protected and clean.

I also keep a box of nitrile gloves in the shop when working with mechanical items to keep my hands clean and my tools clean as well. Over the years, I have scrubbed my hands so much that I wonder how there is still skin on my hands. So, in these years, I would rather protect my hands and my work from the dirt and grease that happens with certain projects, including rod building.
