So I built my first spiral wrapped rod, and LOVE it. I am prepping a blank for strictly top water baits, any reason why a spiral wrap wouldn't be good for this build. My other rod with the spiral i made for pitching and throwing chatterbaits.

Nope all my casting rods are now spirals. Love the way they fight a fish no twisting just straight up and down. Have an light I've caught some 5 lb trout on and you don't get the roll like you do with a conventional rod.

I don't think it serves much purpose for baits I fish tip down.

I only spiral wrap.
It works perfectly for tip up or tip down applications

I too am a spiral wrapper, if there is a negative, I'm not aware of it.

How it looks is the negative but thats 100% individual opinion. People see it and say " My God , lets get you to the optometrist right away "

I much prefer a conventional wrapped for tip down fishing such as jerk bait fishing.

The reason for a conventional wrapped rod in tip down fishing is identical for the same reason that a spiral wrapped rod works well for a tip up fishing.

When fishing tip up, the spiral wrapped rod technique keeps the rod from twisting.

The same thing is true when jerking down so that the tip is up and the guide are on top of the rod when doing this type fishing. The guides on top of the rod keeps the rod from twisting.

But if one rod is used for both types of fishing and more fishing is done with the tip up, and of course the tip is typically up when landing a fish - so that many folks just prefer to use the spiral wrap for all of their rods.

Your choice.

One place that really shines with the use of a spiral wrapped rod and that is with a rod used for trolling where the rod is bent into a parabola for hours on end. The spiral wrapped rod just naturally wants to align itself with perfection to the pull of the line from the lure being towed. 100% positive on the use of a spiral wrapped rod for trolling.

Hi Roger..i too use a simple spiral but do not troll..if i trolled with a conventional rod why couldn,t i just place the rod in the holder such that the guides were facing to the back as if it was a spiral rod..no torque is placed on the rod by the guides..

My worm and jig rods are simple spiral wrapped.

Spiral wrap works fine with topwaters and jerkbaits I use them with mine. To make a comment on top and bottom placement for these type lures the most common rod used for topwater and jerkbaits are... spinning rods.

When I fish bait casters they are spiral wrapped. Been doing it this way for a while now and I use topwaters almost exclusively along with jerk baits. The only reason I can see to have a conventional rod is when trolling and the fish have a subtle bite and you need to set the hook as soon as you can detect the smallest amount of movement. You see the tip on top of the rod easier than on bottom. This can happen when the fish takes the lure and swims along with the boat.

Y'all experience that much twisting force when working a topwater or jerk bait that you feel a spiral isn't as good as a GOT rod? I always thought the actual fighting of the fish was the main consideration.

Maybe I just catch more fish than some of you? (bwahahahahaaaa)
