Adding a ferrule to a graphite fly rod

I have a Sage 2 piece RPLXi and would like to make it a 4 piece. Can this be done?

Yes, with some glass sleeving to use as an oversleeve ferrule. We've done some articles in RodMaker about this. It can be done and done well.

However, unless you want to go to a lot of time, trouble and relatively critical work, I'd just buy a 4-piece blank out of the box and build a new rod.

Thanks Tom. As I have the blank already, can you direct me to those articles? I realize it takes additional time but I love doing these things. M

I would have to go look through the back issues. Will try to get to it sometime today or tomorrow.

Keep in mind any warranty on your blank will go out the window with this alteration. On the other hand, if you enjoy this type of work, you'll certainly enjoy this project.

Hello Michael & Tom.

I found at least 18-20 articles on "Ferrules" in RodMaker Magazine.

There are 2 I off the top of my head 1 from Ralph O'Quinn in Volume 4- Issue 4, and 1 from Tom Kirkman in Volume 16- Issue 2.

Hope this helps, I lost most of my magazines to Florence.

I think you should keep in mind that this may turn a great rod into almost scrap. It is not without risk.

I get the risks and appreciate the warnings and concerns. Robert and/or Tom, is there a way for me to purchase back issues on-line about the ferrule articles?

Not online. I will have the find the issue with the article on making ferrules. It's probably been a few years back, now.

Hopefully it's one of Sages " less expensive " blanks if those even exist.

Michael, the RPLXi is one very nice blank! I have an 8wt 9' 3 pc that is my go-to Bonefish rod. If I was you, I would seriously think about making it a 3pc, thus eliminating one homemade ferrule.

Phil, I have Xis from 6 to 12 and love them all. I am not welcome in most fly shops as I feel I have never cast these rods to their potential so I have to keep them ;-) As for your math, let me know how to turn a 2 piece blank into a 3 piece. Must be new math.

Micheal, here is a post by Mark Talmo concerning ferrule fabrication. He loaned me a rod which he outfitted with his ‘CARL’ ferrule. I was quite impressed with its performance. [www.rodbuilding.org]
