How much of a problem is excess adhesive? Didnt realize till i finishd a wrap that the guide is sitting off blank alittle, planning on redoing it but was just wondering how much of a problem that would cause if gone unnoticed. I adjusted the alignment of said guide and it doesnt seem loose after breaking or loosening bond.

I used guide foot adhesive at first but never used them to attach the guides and then wrap over them , i used the adhesive to temporarily hold the guides on the blank to check spacing but many have done exactly what you're doing and the guide foot adhesives instructions specifically state that it's A OK to wrap over them and let the adhesive provide some protection between it and the blank .

With your specific question i don't see anything to worry about , i would probably choose to rewrap myself but if you notice the guide is flat and it's a very solid connection then no worries .

The best thing to do with guide adhesive is to NOT use it.

I used it once, and said that I would never ever use it again, simply because of the issue that you raise.

Rather, I use either 1/8th inch wide or 1/4 inch wide masking tape to hold the guides in place and it works perfectly.

Plenty of sources for inexpensive tape to take care of the guide holding chores.

I dont like using it but dont know how else for the small guides. Have seen those bands but im new to this and only use what i got in my mudhole starter kit lol

Yea i just looked up 1/8 tape thought i had the thinnest but guess i habe 1/2 and 1/4

The tiny guides is what i used to use the adhesive for lol, those things are a nightmare and if you drop one you may never find it again .

They arent even that tiny kt 8s just figured i got the whole line of tape widths with my kit. Idk what the point of leaving out a 2 buck roll of tape is, when the kit includes everything else i need as a beginner.

Size 8 KT's , those are easy to work with , wait until you try 4.5 or 5 size runners OMG !!!

Just pull off a long section of tape, stick one end on something and use scissors to make thin strips , thats the way i did all the rods i built recently . Just tape the very front of the guide foot with the thin strips of tape , leave the long foot free of tape as thats where you start your wrap .

I have built 100's of rods using guide foot adhesive without any problems at all! No loose or twisted guides under many years of use by lots of customers who fish every actively.

The key is applying the proper amount of adhesive, takes a little practice, but eventually serves it's purpose beautifully. No fiddling with tape on or off, probably twice as fast.

I just cut my masking tape into thin strips with a pair to scissors, I can make them as thin as I want. I wrap the tape over the foot with the toe exposed, and then make a turn or two behind the guide to act as a small dam to prevent the guide from moving forward when you wrap your thread up the toe. If the thread keeps slipping off just touch up the toe of the guide with a file, I use a diamond fingernail file, Just enough to roughen the finish to give the thread more bite. Works for me.

I would never take advice from someone who says they used somethign once and couldn't get a particular product to work. As Phil pointed out, the trick is applying the right amount. Once you do few of them it's pretty easy to figure out. The tape leaves residue and doesn't hold the foot as securely as the adhesive. THose who attended the ICRBE the at few years might have seen Justina from St Croix rods wrapping guides with teh adhesive. THey build hundreds of rods every day using it

Some shy away from the adhesive thinking they cant adjust the guide once it's wrapped. Not True. I wrap and then a slight flick of a fingernail pops the adhesive off the blank and micro adjustments of the guide are easy - like there was no adhesive there at all. Heat the foot and swipe it across the stick - it just takes a tiny bit to hold the guide until you get started with the wrap. Roger Sieders glues the stick to the handle of his torch. It's always right there after he heats the foot. You should see how fast he does it, it'll make you throw rocks at tape and bands.

Yeah, now i realize it was the amount i put on the guide foot that messed me up , i always did it by heating the stick not the guide foot and thats the wrong way .
