So far my son and I have only built on MHX blanks. Read the good reviews here about the OEM blanks and bought a 7' white med hvy blank on clearance for using plastics around light cover. Getting Fuji concept black alconite guides wrapped black with a CRB nub reel seat and carbon fiber butt and grip. We watched the Youtube video and are going to try our hand at sealing the butt and grip. We haven't bit the bullet and bought a lathe yet. We would like to make a mandrel and spin in a cordless drill. My question is do you think the drill will spin fast enough for the application of Permagloss at a inch a second like the video reccomends? Re: Something Different

I use a cordless drill for applying PG to the carbon fiber grips all the time. I use my lathe outside for m turning grips, so it’s a pain to set it up for something this simple. Just snugly fit the grip onto a mandrel and chuck into the cordless drill and apply the PG as shown in the video. I have also chucked the mandrel onto my 20 RPM drying motor and coated the grip that way, plenty fast enough to apply the PG. You certainly don’t need a lathe to do such a simple job. It only takes very short time to do this, and the finish alway comes out great.
Your mandrel can be almost anything, a steel turning mandrel, I piece of blank, a wooden dowel, or a threaded or unthreaded metal rod. Nothing difficult about it. Have fun. Norm Re: Something Different

The problem isn't whether it will spin fast enough, but will it spin slow enough. In the video, I'm probably not operating the lathe at more than about 200RPM.

Sure, it will work just fine. Might take a few seconds longer. If you want you can apply a second coat within 30 - 60 minutes or any time after that. Hard to screw it up using the foam brush as Tom shows in the video. However, the drill will also work just fine, if you are worried about speed, just put the drill in the # 1 speed mode.

Since there are 2 of you, you can always do as i did for the longest time.. Put the rod in your stands... Have one of you just spin it kind of hand over hand while the other applies it.. As long as you keep a steady, continueous rotation you should be fine, place it on your rod dryer so it doesnt sag.. It sets up pretty quick.. I only put 1 coat on, but after casting for an entire day, ended up puting 3 total in that manner Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
