On most standard spey rods, the grips are, (IMHO) to skinny. I have been experimenting with making a fatter grip. One of the concerns about 2 handed cast I have is to much wrist. What do you guys think about making the grips fatter? I feel it would take some of the wrist out of casting. I am talking about rods 12 foot and longer.

Nearly all commercially made rods employ grips that are far to small in diameter. Go bigger. Remember, you can always turn them smaller if need be, so start larger and then come down until you have dialed in what you want.

Didn't used to be that way, it started a decade, or so ago, a Loop I was trying out was the first skinny grips I noticed. My old Sage 9140 has nice fat grips, I just wish the foregrip was an inch longer. Pac Bay's and Angler's Workshop's grips were still nice and meaty last rod I built on them.

If I was smart enough to add a pic, I would show the handle I turned yesterday. It is nice to know the fatter grips are acceptable. It just seems to be more dimensional with big rod.

Not only are they acceptable, but in most cases are nearly always more ergonomically correct.

There is absolutely no "wrist" in a Spey cast.
All the power is applied with the lower hand.
The upper is used only to direct cast.

The thin upper part of the grip is that way on purpose since it it loosely held

Since the classic spey casts are not underhand dominate like Andersen's modification of a single spey cast, I'll stay with the fat grips, but to each their own.

Herb, I am no expert on 2 handed casting. However, I understand genetics to hit a baseball. The thinner handle bats create faster bat speed because the hands are not as locked up as with a fatter handle bat. To me, (IMHO) having a fatter upper handle will help in not letting the wrist of the upper hand try and break easily. I also understand your premises of the lower hand being the power hand in most cases. You can loosely hold a thin handle or fat handle in the same manner. That is feel..

Spencer, I have to agree with you. But I am only trying to learn the most efficient way of building a spey rod. I welcome all opinions.
