Hi Guys
Have been given a small shopcraft hobby lathe with a half inch drill chuck on it . It has a slide variable speed motor. I would like to use it for sanding and shaping and maybe a power reamer, only problem is that it starts a bit faster than I would like and the slide control is hard to work with. it runs off of household current so I would like to put a foot control on it so I could have a bit more of a hands free operation. biggest problem is I know nothing about things electrical so would appreciate any suggestions on how, if even possible, to do this. thanks for any help you can give me Robert Re: shopcraft hobby lathe

If it has a variable speed motor then already have what you want. Turn the dial down all the way and then spin it up as you're sure the workpiece is secure. The electronic variable speed stuff has gotten very good even in the lower price ranges. No need for a foot control on that type lathe.
Now having said that, there are some tasks that you don't want to do on a lathe, at least not one with any real power. depends on exactly it is that you're wanting to do on the lathe. .............. Re: shopcraft hobby lathe

HI again
thanks for your help but the reason for foot or other control is because it is an old lathe and it starts at about 6-700 rpm . this is too fast for a start that might need an adjustment. just thought that since it was variable speed it would not hurt anything if I could slow it down some and then maybe I could use it. thanks again I do appreciate your help Robert Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
